18 Mile Red Peach
Carolina Bauernhaus Ales
A Note on This Beer
Once upon a time (2017), in a land far far away (South Carolina), Carolina Barnhaus partnered with the local University’s agricultural program to make use of their extra red peaches. CB’s 18 Mile Red Peach Barrel-Aged Sour Ale was so juicy and zingy, and their Sour clout so well-known, that other breweries came knocking.
“We wanna’ make a peach brew, too -- but where’d you get those red peaches?” they asked.
Being the community-oriented Sour leaders they are, Carolina Barnhaus connected the other breweries to the University. Then everyone created their own peachy brews, and CB hosted a big ho-down called Peachening.
Carolina Barnhaus’ clever use of barrel-aging with their own Lacto strain is what kept festival-goers coming back for more. It’s built on their original 18-Mile Sour, a Flanders-style brew aged eight months in Petite Syrah barrels for jammy blackberry-like character. Locally-grown peaches age for an additional 6 months, creating tannic stonefruit depth.
18 Mile Red Peach inspired a whole festival of peach Sour Ales. So host your own Peachening bottleshare and see how a Sour peach Ale and a sweet story can bring people together.
