About This Beer
To craft Dr. Jekyll, the False Idol crew started with a malt-forward base. Then they balanced the sweetness with a smattering of hops and aged the beer in rye whiskey barrels for 11 months, introducing toffee and baking spice nuances.
Tasting Notes
Rich rye aromas perfume the air with every dark mahogany-hued pour. On the sip, toasted pumpernickel and dried plum notes mingle with golden caramel and oaky vanilla. The character of the beer starts to shift as pops of rye spice bring plenty of punch to the flavorful finale.

Tasted alongside Mr. Hyde, the same beer aged in bourbon.
The rye barrel here adds a spicy finish to the beer, and makes the front of the body have an alcohol sweetness to go along with a slight dryness, akin to an Irish stout.
This barrel works better than the bourbon barrel used in the other beer, but strangely, I don't particularly care for the overall result more. The mouthfeel is still thin, the overall impression fleeting. I think the problem here is that the underlying Scotch ale being barrel-aged is just not an exceptional beer.
