Why Are Cakes Round? And Other Pastry Mysteries
A Note on This Beer
Did you know that cakes have been round since ancient days? The trendsetters of yore modeled them after the sun and moon.
Now, the innovators at Brouwerij West are moving a new trend forward — the cake beer! This California crew used so many dessert ingredients in today’s Imperial Pastry Stout, it’ll make all the bakers jealous!
Starting with a base beer of dark, chocolatey malts, the brewers added “everyone's favorite hazelnut chocolate spread,” and loads of richly flavorful Wild Thai bananas. Then, they layered in hazelnuts and cacao nibs, and it still wasn’t enough! Those crafty beer chefs piled in doses of vanilla AND vanilla cookies to finish off their drinkable confection.
And my-oh-my, is it drinkable. Sporting a massively buzzing 15% ABV, this Stout offers decadent flavors of a banana split topped with vanilla cake and hazelnut brownie crumbles. Yum!
I would say this beer is meant for sharing because of the booze level, but who are we kidding — one luscious mouthful, and you’re going to want to horde this Pastry delight to yourself.
Though, if anyone does come by and asks Why Are Cakes Round? Well, now you know.

Pretty damn flavorful - was honestly overwhelming for me, but the flavor was amazing.
Taste was on point would go good on some ice cream
Yuck! Out of the whole crate, this was by far the worst brew!! Our group of 9 all thought it was too thick & bitter of a beer. Nobody could finish their coule of ounces!
Slight bitterness, but over all very flavorful and thick and wonderful. Would have loved more banana, but the hazelnut was on point
Does not feel like a 15%
Really sweet . Really good
Alcohol content is high and completely undetectable. This is absolutely sorcery. The banana flavor addition is genius and made me feel like I was drinking artisan crepes. Thanks for the experience!
Very tasty stout. Jam packed full of different flavors and it has the vanilla / caramel base to fall back on. I could taste the 15% a little bit but would certainly have one again. Which I will because I got two!!
I got expired beer! I was definitely looking forward to drinking this. I received it earlier this month, but found out that it expired back in February. I was disappointed I didn’t get a chance to try this.
Super sweet. A little too sweet for me but still drinkable. 15% but drinks like a 8% or 10%. Banana is the strongest flavor. Tastes like a banana/chocolate or nutella dessert.
I love stouts but I couldn’t even drink 1/4 of it. I’m not sure if it was too chocolatey or too much banana.
Thick and rich, sweet and boozy. A bit of chocolate, a bit of hazelnut. A hint of banana in the aftertaste.
Definitely a lot of banana and a little hazelnut.
Really great blend of flavors: chocolate, bananas, hazelnut, vanilla….all with super high ABV that isn’t even noticeable - very solid brew out of LA
Definitely a dessert beer! Really enjoyed this one!
Tastes like what a bakery baking sweet pastries smell. Nice body. Cheers.
Incredibly thick and very sweet (maybe too sweet), banana is heavy as well (though not artificial tasting).
