A Note on This Beer
Often, the most highly regarded beers are the hardest ones to find. People camp overnight in front of breweries, travel to tiny Belgian hill towns and spend hundreds on online auctions to try the most prestigious and exclusive beers out there.
Sometimes, though, the best beers are hiding in plain sight.
Unibroue is a Quebecois brewery unequivocally recognized as the best maker of Belgian-style beers outside of Belgium. On crowded shelves in the store, wearing a label that looks stolen straight from Magic: The Gathering, it’s easy to miss Trois Pistoles. But this Unibroue beer the second-highest rated Belgian Dark Strong Ale in the world.
But Trois Pistoles isn’t brand-new, and it’s not a secret either. It’s been winning top honors at beer festivals all over the world for a decade and a half since taking the gold at the Chicago World Beer Championship in 1998. Since then, it’s come away with a mere fifteen more gold medals, a testament to the beer’s enduring success.
Trois Pistoles pours a rich mahogany color with a rapidly fading, bubbly tan head. The aroma blends luxuriant notes of Belgian yeast with roasted malts, sweet notes of dark berries and figs and spicy flavors of clove and pepper. These flavors come on stronger yet in the taste—plum and fig notes lead into malty brown sugar and molasses flavors that punch you right in the mouth. These are all anchored by the spicy Belgian yeast, which provides a pleasant, lingering finish reminiscent of leather-bound books.
From the judges at the World Beer Championship to the friendly beer nerds at Tavour, those who’ve tried Trois Pistoles will agree that it’s worth every medal it’s received.
