Noel, a Portland-based home-brewer entered a “Create a Great Beer” contest (think kickstarter for beer) on Realbeer.com. Although thousands of beer drinkers and experts alike entered the contest, Blake’s dream beer, a completely innovative style of Belgian mixed with sour cherry ale, stood out and won the contest. Noel not only created a new style, he described the beer with the backdrop of characters from the original satire “The Three Philosophers” by William Blake.

Noel Blake may have had the idea, but it was Brewery Ommegang from Cooperstown, New York that made his dream brew a reality. Ommegang’s Three Philosophers is a blend of 98% Ommegang Quadrupel Belgian ale and 2% Leifman’s kreik sour cherry ale. The result is a one of a kind flavor.

Three Philosophers is a beautiful mahogany-colored brew with a rich, thick mouthfeel. Thanks to roasted malt paired with dark fruit, this strong beer has a warm, caramel flavor and subtly tart cherry notes. Brewed specifically for contemplation, this beer is great for meditation now, but will also age wonderfully until 2018.

To get all of this fascinating beer’s aromas, and to look like a philosopher while you’re at it, or to get inspiration for your next moonshot, we suggest drinking Three Philosophers out of a wide-rimmed goblet.
