A Note on This Beer

When spring hits the Northwest corner of Washington state, muddy fields transform into colorful wonderlands. People come from far and wide to explore the endless rows of tulips.

Those who are ultra-adventurous travel here for sips of Garden Path Fermentation, specifically The Untended Bloom! This “Skagitonian barrel-aged Saison” so beautifully embodies the essence of Pacific Northwest springtime, it was hand-picked to be the signature beer of Tulip Town (one of the area’s premier tulip farms)!

Like a field of flowers, this delicate and complex brew went through its own season of growth and transformation. The brewers originally planned for this ale to only take a couple of months. But, this Saison longed for more time. The expert brewers at Garden Path listened, letting it mature in oak and bottle-condition for nearly two years before being released.

This patience – combined with the additions of local blackberry honey, Pacific Northwest grown Golding, Crystal, Cascade, Tettnang, and Perle hops, and 100% native yeast – resulted in a subtle sipper with dry, earthy notes, a touch of hay funk, and a soft toasty malt flavor.

Though the Untended Bloom is usually unavailable outside of its Washington lodgings, we managed to pluck a few to bring you a taste of the Skagit Valley right at home.

But, with only 480 bottles, these won’t make it ‘til the end of the Tulip season!

Nice floral character in an otherwise underwhelming beer.

spicy, tart, yeasty and fresh. this is a solid, solid saison. heavier on the mouthfeel than 4.5% would suggest, but it works for this beer well.

Not every saison has to be on the sour side. Disappointing for aging two years. Expected the sourness to die down but still too much for me. Never understood aging a sour beer.
