The Rusty Nail (2020)
A Note on This Beer
The Rusty Nail is back! If you’ve tried it, you already know — the last three vintages scored 4.5+ on Tavour. If you haven’t snagged a sip, here’s what you’ve been missing:
- Aged 15 months in 8 to 12-year-old Bourbon Barrels with brewer’s licorice and cassia cinnamon bark, this beast swells on the palate with layers of dark cocoa and spice, atop a finely-tuned Bourbon profile.
- The 13.3% ABV is completely cloaked behind rich aromas of caramelized sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla.
- With the first sip, you’ll notice each element present in a thick, chewy mouthfeel full of dark chocolate, leather, Bourbon-soaked raisins, vanilla, molasses, and a touch of smoke.
This beer is the crown jewel of Fremont’s multi-award winning portfolio and a prime example of the barrel-aging expertise that rocketed them to national acclaim. It’s also the #2 English Oatmeal Stout in the World on BeerAdvocate with a perfect 100/100 score — so, having a bottle will immediately elevate your cellar to craft-rockstar status.
But don’t bother calling around to bottleshops. Even if you fly to Seattle and head to Fremont’s taproom, you won’t be able to score a drop of this brew. Luckily, we just happen to have a few bottles stashed away!

These guys only make good stouts. Can't fail.
Cinnamon and bourbon. Nuff said
Layers of silky flavor. Cinnamon and dark chocolate
It was like sipping a nice bourbon while comprehending it was a smooth stout.
Taste is anise, cinnamon, chocolate heavy throughout. Notes of vanilla and brown sugar on the mid-palate. Finishes with hints of tobacco, dark fruit and barrel. Rusty nail has been a staple for a long while now. If I could rate this closer to a 4.65, I would Efrain79 - will you stop rating like you actually hate beer ffs?
Delicious but definitely strong
Strong and delicious licorice base. A typically fantastic Fremont offering. Super smooth
this was pretty good
Incredibly rich and decadent.
Rusty nail is always good!
Bold, big flavors but smooth. Barrel is integrated well and hits all the right notes. Would cellar well.
Cinnamon, barrel. Good!!
Tasty but a bit too spice dominated fresh for me. Would be even better with age.
Rusty Nail is definitely a personal favorite! Barrel aged. Coffee. Chocolate.
All the flavors come through nicely
One of the greatest stouts to ever part these lips
On point as usual
One of the best I’ve had. Wish I could get more!!
😂🤪I don't like it.
Perfect as usual. 🍻
This is a beer for fat guys who like to drink their dessert.
As good as it gets, whenever you are any Freemont... Buy it!
Strong barrel and balanced licorice/cassis. Super rich, definitely share.
A truly outstanding Oatmeal stout. Amazing bourbon barrel-aged black brew with cinnamon, molasses, maple syrup, black cherry, and sticky mouthfeel.
lots of raisins!
Super smooth with hints of licorice and raostiness!
If I knew when I was going to die I would want to be drinking this amazing Stout so that the person delivering my eulogy could say “He died doing what he loved”. I have a 2013 B-Bomb that I’m saving for a special occasion and can only imagine how good that’s going to be.
All I have to say is wow, hands down the best beer I have had since I turned 21 over a decade ago.
Excellent way to end the night, absolutely delicious!
I get hit with cinnamon spice along with a rich chocolatey taste up front and a boozy finish. It gets even better and silky as it warms up!
Always a solid choice. Even if you don't mind licorice, you'll probably like it in this beer
robust and smooth with a slight cinnamon finish.
