Sump Coffee Stout
Perennial Artisan Ales
A Note on This Beer
Perennial’s deluxe espresso sipper, Sump Coffee Stout, starts with the brewery's incredibly smooth, dark chocolate Stout base. On its own, this Stout holds multitudes of flavors: fudgy cacao, nutty pecan, toffee, creamy vanilla, and even a hint of sweet pear.
But, that’s only half the story. Perennial then added coffee grown in the Monte Alban region of Oaxaca, Mexico. Which was first roasted to perfection by their friends over at Sump Coffee — a coffee shop and roastery crowned “extraordinary” by NYC’s esteemed Grub Street Mag
Each decadent sip also holds amazing single-origin Mexican coffee notes: a gentle fruitiness, roasty burnt caramel, and even more layers of chocolate.
It tastes like a rich pecan, caramel, and dark cacao brownie, dunked right into a cup of some of the best artisanal, pour-over coffee you can find. A hint of lactose adds a sweet vanilla bean ice cream-esque finish to round out the whole experience!
Those who’ve tried this almost sinfully-good Stout have a few choice thoughts:
- “Have had it before and will most certainly have it again. My favorite coffee stout. Cannot recommend this one enough.” @Kyle S.
- “How many times can I close my eyes and say “umm that’s good?” @Tia H.
- “This beer was f****** phenomenal.” @Stefan A.
With fan endorsement like that, it’s easy to see that this isn’t a Stout to pass up. Especially since each year Perennial Ales and Sump like to mix up their coffee — this will probably be the only time they offer this amazing Oaxacan single-origin version!
*For an optimal drinking experience, Perennial suggests keeping these Stouts cool!

Strong coffee flavor
Good balance of coffee and chocolate! Smooth 11.5%
Smooth, creamy, sweet coffee deliciousness! Worth every penny!
This is so good! I cant believe it’s gone. I am going to dream about this beer!!!!
Coffee and more Coffee.
Definitely heavy on the coffee and cocoa. Little too sweet & fudgy for my liking. Pretty good though.
That! More of that!
Thick and yummy.
A really good imperial stout. The coffee is not overwhelming and feels like just the right balance. I don’t think this is too sweet at all. Some jammy stout with syrup get to be much sweeter than this one. I have found I don’t like overly sweet beer. This is not one of those.
Smooth and not too sweet. Great coffee flavor.
Not as good as the Ecuador and El Salvador version.
Some of the best coffee flavor in any stout!! I love that they are now canning Sump.
Solid 4.25 great coffee chocolate stout
Huge coffee presence, it's actually kind of incredible. Like sipping a nitro cold brew with 11.5% ABV for funsies. Delicious
A touch sweet for a coffee stout. Strong and tasty though.
This is definitely the pinnacle of coffee stouts. If anything it drinks like a thick, black coffee. Clear coffee flavor. Great Stout aroma. Almost no hit of alcohol. I feel like it could have more depth to it. Maybe a different coffee blend, but outstanding nonetheless.
Chocolate, coffee, creaminess, and the 11.5% well hidden.
Very smooth caramel and coffee flavors meld amazingly with chocolate malts in the stout base. Slight bitterness enhances the overall taste.
Good coffee stout
That's a THICK pour. Super even flavor. No bite or alcohol to it at all... The coffee is a bit lighter than I'd have expected, but it's tasty.
Solid. Would buy again.
Taste just like a cold coffee!! Delicious
Decent with some chocolate. Coffee character was light
Definitely got the coffee on this and wish I’d of gotten 2, it was good!
It's got a very roasty stout taste with sweet vanilla and plenty of coffee without it being overpowering.
Good beer but nothing special.
Tons of coffee, but not overwhelming at all.
Solid coffee bomb
Morning beer i think so!
Go to coffee stout STL
This was really good. Could drink a couple of these one after another.
Absolutely one of the best coffee stouts I’ve ever tasted. Very smooth with a soft clean finish. Love it!
Too sweet and not enough coffee. Had high expectations of this one, bummer.
Not a smooth imperial.
Big coffee nose. Pours like motor oil - thick as mud. Creamy & luscious mouthfeel. On the palate, big roasty coffee, w/bittersweet chocolate & subtle vanilla & nuttiness. Amazing. Note: can says “11.5ABV” & Untappd has it at 10.5, but who’s counting.
Desert beer! Strong coffee and think pour. Finishes sweet, great beer
Wow! A Strong coffee Stout!
Delightful coffee flavor with strong chocolate finish
Sweet coffee and vanilla.
Huge coffee and boozy love it as always
Full bodied, not overwhelming coffee, well balanced. About perfect for a coffee stout. I think the coffee flavors could come out a bit more, but I love the coffee flavors in a good stout.
Thinner than I remember from the bottle but good
Very enjoyable. Smooth, great coffee flavor. Glad I bought more than one.
Not heavy coffee, really kinda smooth
Taste like an amazing chocolate coffee smoother than expected
Creamy mouthfeel, definitely get some chocolate tons, little boozy with a subtle espresso flavor towards the end. I would want more coffee in this.
Dark Espresso, High Cacao Chocolate, Vanilla, Green Bell Pepper
Ordered from Tavour. Chilled and poured into an imperial pint glass. Look: dark brown, almost black, dark tan creamy three finger head that cascaded. Hard poured and overflowed the glass. The lacing is a beautiful tan clinging lace that hangs to the side of the glass Smell: sweet day old cold coffee, dark roast and almost a hint of vanilla Taste: sweet day old coffee, roasty notes, lingering sweet, hints of booze Feel: full mouthfeel, super creamy feel with not tickle of carbonation at all. Syrupy and thick Perennial is a super creative brewer and this is a fun, sweet, creamy coffee stout that hides the booze well. Love this beer personally, but then again there are two drinks in my every day, coffee and beer... put them together and you got me. Cheers everyone!
Luscious and creamy
Chocolaty, rich, smooth with just the right amount of coffee
One of the best coffee stouts you can buy anywhere in the United States
Sweet and syrupy so might be too heavy to pair with any food
Coffee, beer, yes.
This is a thiccc boi
Great smooth stout with light coffee. Great beer.
Tastes almost borderline porter instead of stout with the malt notes. Good coffee flavor
Excellent way to start the day - coffee, mild bitterness, sweet and delicious
Not sure about this one or why it's getting such high reviews
Excellent coffee mixture
It was good! Nice flavor and easy to drink.
Definitely one of the best of the best coffee stouts available today. The chocolate coffee mix is sublime. Very, very nice bold, rich coffee flavor.
Thick pour. Full mouthfeel. Very good coffee flavor. Would definitely purchase again!
Rich coffee flavor.
Smooth, rich, and tasty with the coffee.
This is better than the variant.
Just a good solid coffee stout. Not much else to say.
A very solid, very tasty stout. Coffee flavor hit nicely
Outstanding complexity and flavors
Chocolate and Coffee !!!
Very smooth and impressive coffee beer, glad to try this over Abraxas
Solid coffee stout. Made for a good breakfast
Excellent coffee stout that is rich and compelling
Pretty sure it’s one of the OG coffee stouts and still one of the best. I miss the romanticism of the 750, but the new size and artwork are epic. Pours oily thick with layers of rich roast. ☕️😋 Proof stouts can be adjucted without being pastry.
Poured so smoothly. It’s the perfect blend of stout and coffee. I’ll drink it again whenever I can get ahold of it!
A little big for breakfast beer, but in the best ways.
a creamy coffee. not much chocolate for me, but it tasted like a iced coffee with alcohol in it. not bad at all
