A Note on This Beer
My anniversary is coming up, and I’ve been searching endlessly for the perfect bottle to celebrate the many years my wife and I have been putting up with each other.
So when Sour Ale specialist and head brewer Jay Goodwin at The Rare Barrel told me that they hand-processed over 4,000 pounds of stone fruit per batch to make today’s beer, I just had to taste it myself.
When I got to the Bay Area brewery, I was greeted by the smell of peach cobbler and I thought the brewers were making my favorite summertime dessert — instead, I found them depitting and crushing what can only be described as a sh*tload of fresh peaches and nectarines by hand!
With that much mouth-watering fruit, I can see why today’s Summer’s Gonna Hurt You Sour Ale is rated a gargantuan 4.30 on Untappd! With scores this high from so many fellow beer geeks, I knew I was making the right choice for a special night bottle.
The time and effort the brewers put into every beer has earned The Rare Barrel multiple medals at GABF and World Beer Cup and a spot on UT’s Top 50 Breweries in the United States just 5 years after opening their doors!
To make this limited-edition sipper, the brewers first selected 2,000 pounds of ripe nectarines and another 2,000 pounds of juicy peaches from a family-owned farm in Central California. They pit and puree the fruit, mix it with their crisp Golden Sour Ale, and age the blend in their hand-selected Oak Barrels for four months!
The result? A tangy, 7.3% ABV Sour that is so bright and fruity, it tastes like biting into a fresh peach from the farmer’s market! Close your eyes, and you can almost feel the sticky, sweet juice dripping down your chin!
This mega-fruited beer is destined to make any occasion special. Pair it with an anniversary feast, or as an accompaniment to a romantic sunset viewing. When the moment is right, get down on one knee, pop out the bottle, and ask to share.
Hopefully, sharing this deliciously fruity sipper with my wife on our special day will make up for my years of snoring...at least for a few nights.
