A Note on This Beer
‘Barrel Aged Sumi Zest’ - Pre-order - 12% ABV - 500ml bottle - Barrel Aged Stout - ETA late-October
Welcome to ‘Pre Orders!’ This is where you can snag the latest beers from your favorite breweries before they’re even bottled!
A few things to know:
- Check out the "Pre Orders" tab on the "My Crate" page — that’s where you can secure your stash of upcoming releases.
- If you don’t have an open crate, a new one will open as soon as your pre-ordered beer lands. Don’t worry, we’ll let you know when it happens!
- Most of these beers will sell out in pre-order and won’t be available for regular purchase. Miss them now, and you might never see them again.
And this one is especially exciting, because it’s the first time that Grimm has ever released a barrel aged version of their beloved Sumi Zest! The brewers only released the non BA version once, way back in 2017, but it became legendary among NYC Stout fans. Now it’s back, and it’s better than ever.
The Beer:
To create this bigger, bolder, burlier version of this beloved brew, the Grimm crew started with a luscious base Stout, replete with notes of fudge and roasty mocha. Then they conditioned it on tangy orange zest and creamy vanilla, and bourbon barrel aged the beer to give it hints of caramel and oak. It’s luscious, dense, and full of chocolate-orange flavor. And given that the original version has only dropped once (and that was 5 years ago!) this might be your only chance to get a taste.
The Brewery:
Joe and Lauren Grimm spent close to a decade honing their skills as homebrewers before finally founding their namesake brewery in 2013. And for the next five years, they didn’t even have a taproom. The duo spent those years developing their recipes in the kitchen of their apartment in Brooklyn’s Gowanus neighborhood, and then brewing full sized batches at various breweries around the country. They’d travel anywhere, as long as someone had a mash tun and fermenter they could use! Then, in 2018, they opened their own brewery in Brooklyn. Ever since, their IPAs like Tesseract, Stouts like Double Negative, and fruity Sours like Rainbow Dome have cemented their place as one of the Big Apple’s very best!
