Spoonful of Sugar (2019)
Illuminated Brew Works
A Note on This Beer
Take a sip of today’s nostalgically sweet Spoonful of Sugar with your eyes closed, and you might just think you’re drinking liquid candy.
From the Willy Wonka-like brewers at Chicago’s Illuminated, this DDH Double IPA is brimming with so much nectarous hop juice, it’s like biting into a grown-up Gusher.
This 4.26 BA rated brew is one of Illuminated’s most indulgent treats, and our sweet-toothed Tavour members can’t get enough. They practically held us down and demanded we bring it back for the 4th time!
Snag a can (did we mention it’s in cans this time?!) and you’ll join a select few in-the-know craft fans going cuckoo for these hard to find brews.
Illuminated’s arsenal of 4+ UT rated, nostalgically sweet IPAs have been drawing locals for nearly six years. But with tiny 10-15 barrel batch sizes and no taproom to visit, actually getting a chance to taste this spoonful of hop sugar is sweeter than scoring a Golden Ticket!
Brewed with lactose, this beer drinks like a creamy fruit slushie. Galaxy and Motueka Hops bring a basket brimming with tropical fruits and crushed citrus. But the lactose steals the show, transforming this DIPA’s body into a thick candy cloud that completely obliterates any trace of its 8% ABV. It’s so juicy and dreamy, one sip will have you joining the fans who call it “easily one of the best IPAs I’ve ever had.”
Illuminated has quickly become a revered name in the cutthroat Chicago craft scene with their adventurously bold, flavor-focused beers. With such limited-availability, Spoonful of Sugar is the boozy, everlasting hopstopper DIPA fans ravenously hunt down.

Fine. Not sure how on board I am with lactose ipa’s.
