Splinters Bourbon Barrel Aged Scotch Ale (2016)
Black Raven Brewing Company
A Note on This Beer
Black Raven Brewing CO’s Bourbon Barrel-Aged Splinters releases an eye-opening snap of oak, a caramel-seared kiss of kettle corn, and the rich date-like sweetness of the Scotch Ale base-- these decadent flavors are enhanced with age, so we cellared a small stash to enjoy this beer treasure at peak indulgence levels that even surpassed our high expectations we after first tasting it.
Over the course of six months in a collection of different bourbon barrels, each with its own distinct imprint-- Black Raven combines the contents of the barrels, enabling the spicy, fruity, dessert-like range of single-barrel flavors to meld together for a month. The result is the boozy, woody complexity you’ll find in every bottle of Splinters.
The nuanced flavors of Special B and Chocolate Malts sneak out from behind a cellar-full of spicy liquor-soaked wood. Together they contribute a drizzle of milky chocolate infused with ripe raisins and bananas-- to the bourbon’s buttery toffee, sweet-tooth satisfaction. But Splinters’ 10.8% ABV warmth and dryness leaves an ultra-light footprint on the finish.
Lovers of uncompromising flavor and bourbon will both find what they crave in this powerful brew.
A Scotch Ale’s elaborate malt bill makes it ideal for pairing with the polyphonic buzz of bourbon. Black Raven takes this pairing up a notch with a variety of barrels that give you the overlapping intensity of a top-shelf whiskey flight.
We've cellared a small stash of Black Raven Splinters for 8 months and it tastes amazing-- some of the best beers in life (this one included) are truly worth waiting for.
