A Note on This Beer
Today’s two-pack is for the adventurers, the explorers, the flavor-nauts who constantly seek out new and interesting brews. If that sounds like you, prepare your taste buds, because I’ll bet you’ve never sampled anything quite like these brews from The Referend Bier Blendery.
First up, there’s Hills Like White Elephants (2018). This spontaneously fermented Golden Ale spent a full year aging in a single Absinthe barrel before the brewers bottle conditioned it for 14 months with local New Jersey wildflower honey.
Notes of anise from the barrels mingle with the tangy, lemon-zest zip of the base beer, while nuances of oaky vanilla add depth and complexity. It tastes like something Hemingway might drink while scribbling lines in a Paris café. Which is appropriate, because it’s named after a short story that Ernest wrote!
Next, we have Song of the Earth (Chanterelle 2019). Another spontaneously fermented Golden Ale, the brewers conditioned this one on locally foraged chanterelle mushrooms for 10 months — one of nature’s most mysterious and delicious treats.
The earthy, rich, umami flavor of the mushrooms permeates the lemony tang of the base beer, elevating it’s notes of wild, grassy funk. On the front, expect puckering acidity, but it quickly mellows to a soft, balanced finish. Early taster @Luke M. calls it “one of the strangest beers I’ve had!” He rates it 4.5 out of 5.
If you’re the timid type when it comes to trying new beers, this two pack probably isn’t for you. But, if you’re a bit more Hemingway-esque about flavor adventures, these beers will take you to frontiers you’ve likely never explored before.
But, be warned: we have just 120 bundles to go around!
The Referend’s spontaneously fermented Ales earned them a spot on VinePair’s list of The 50 Best Beers of 2019!
