A Note on This Beer
It takes something special to pull a craft beer drinking New Yorker out of Manhattan or Brooklyn. In those neighborhoods, they can practically toss a growler out of their apartment window and into the hands of a skilled brewmaster.
So why are these New Yorkers patiently sitting through an hour and a half train ride to the northernmost edge of the Bronx? Because that’s where GABF award-winning Stout maker, Gun Hill Brewing, sits waiting for them.
It’s beers like today’s Shot in the Dark that are driving fans outta’ the city and into Gun Hill’s happy taproom. This bittersweet and decadent Stout was inspired by chocolate-covered fruit. Because why eat just fruit when you can eat fruit covered in luscious milk chocolate? (No reason, that’s why). This Stouts’ got everything from real oats, lactose, blackcurrant pureé, blackberry pureé, plum pureé, and even cocoa nibs. The flavor is like a super moist dark chocolate cake with blueberry icing. Pouring with a robust 10.5% ABV ensures a sweet finish to the liquid sipping journey.
Up at Gun Hill, New York’s craft world looks a bit different. It’s a world where the brewery’s yoga classes are packed with craft-loving ladies of every shape and color; where the brewers’ progression from playing semi-pro baseball to brewing super niche beer seems natural; and where Stouts taste like bittersweet chocolate mousse with fresh fruit on top.
