A Note on This Beer
Atlas Brew Works’ mega-hopped Ponzi IPA is no bait and switch -- it’s hopped five different times with Mandarina, Ahtanum, Cascade, Centennial, and Chinook Hops into a towering pyramid of fruity, piney, citrus zippyness!
The go-to hopsurger for Washington D.C. craft insiders when they wanna shut out the political noise (which is often), Ponzi gets it’s name from an elaborate, pyramid-shaped brewing schedule -- that’s right, they’re taking ponzi back for the good guys.
Atlas experimented with dozens of hop varieties and hopping times before they landed with what the brewer calls “a pyramid scheme of hops.” All five hops are used through five different stages at increasing levels: Blossoming ruby red grapefruit zests from Ahtanum Hops shout through the nose alongside Cascade’s classic floral citrus bite. Mandarina Hops unload a fruit truck of tangerine sensations with Chinook’s hint of fir tip-like resin. Centennial brings the bitter panache of lemon rinds, pepper spice and a lingering pine twist.
In 2010, there wasn’t a single production brewery in D.C. Atlas helped to change all that, spearheading the craft movement there with the blast of hops in their Ponzi IPA. We’re proud to have them represent our first D.C. brewery, and delighted to get a taste of the hoppiest thing in our nation’s capital for the first time outside of the East Coast.
