About This Beer
Nightmare on Stout is a twist on Crooked Stave’s beloved Nightmare on Brett series — a Sour Stout! This rarely-seen style begins like a Stout and finishes like a sweet-tart dessert beer.
The brewers at Crooked Stave aged it in a mix of Heaven Hill Maple Bourbon Barrels and Woodford Reserve Barrels for a mind blowing 56 months! That’s nearly 5 years slowly maturing on oak, until they achieved just the right flavors.
Tasting Notes
This Sour Stout is probably unlike anything you’ve tried before. It begins like a tangy whiskey sour, then slides into nuances of oaky mocha and candied dates. A tannic finish rounds things off and invites the next sip.

I have to remember to rate while tasting. all I remember is that it was the best sour stout I have tasted. I will definitely pick it up again if it crosses my path.

Delicious, but almost like a wine. Certain to take you by surprise, but in a good way. Best with a meal, in my opinion.

Very very interesting beer. It’s wild. At first you get a nice dark chocolate with slight barrel ending in a slight tart/sour cherry. Unlike any other beer I’ve ever had. Acquired pallet no doubt. Super unique style!

Sour and different. Interesting but I’m not sure I can recommend it unless you like being adventurous. it does grow on you the more you drink it.

Cherry tartness upfront, but mellows out and the chocolate shines at the end. I get hints of the Bourbon and doesn't run too boozy.
