A Note on This Beer
If you’re wondering what the heck a mulberry is, you’re not alone. I admit, I didn’t really know until I tasted today’s beer.
Turns out, mulberries are basically overgrown blackberries with a delectable blend of sweet n’ tart flavors. Their juice is thick as a berry marmalade spread, but crisp undertones give ‘em a citrus-like refreshment.
All flavors you’ll savor in today’s Keowee. This brew has the lip smackingly-delicious flavors of a tangy Flanders Red Sour Ale, but its big, jammy juice explosions come from copious amounts of locally-foraged mulberries!
One sip, and you’ll get to know this tasty berry — and you’ll also understand why the GABF Gold Medalists at Carolina Bauernhaus are hailed by Southern Beer bloggers as one of the region’s best.
These South Carolina brewmasters didn’t even stop at the mulberries — they refined Keowee’s deep crimson-amber pour and dark fruit complexity by aging it in red wine barrels for three months! Deep layers of oak and black cherry smooth out each sip.
I would recommend you share this beer with someone worth impressing, but who am I kidding? Whether you’re already familiar with mulberries or this is your first taste of ‘em, you’re gonna suck down this 7.2% ABV Sour like those berries are going out of season for good!

*Fun Fact to Impress Your Friends: ’Keowee’ is a Cherokee word that means “Place of the Mulberries.”
