A Note on This Beer

“I love this beer...this might be the best non-BA Barleywine that I have ever had, seriously, it is that bomb.”

That’s not some random fan talking, that’s @dontdrinkbeers — beloved brew blogger and host of the Malt Couture podcast. A man who took the ‘Barleywine is Life’ mantra one step further by literally making Barleywine his life!

And, when it comes to Gratitude (2020) from East End Brewing, he’s not alone.

The aficionados at Fueled by Hops say “if you love Barleywine, this is a must do.” Food & Wine calls it “a beer-geek sensation” and fans on BeerAdvocate have rated Gratitude the #12 American Barleywine in the World!

So, there’s just one question: why haven’t you tried this beer?

Probably because it only comes out once a year, when the crew at East End loads their kettle with 2 full tons of malt to create a single 15-barrel batch. Then, they balance all that sweet caramel and candied date flavor with what they call “a massive hop charge!”

The result is enchantingly complex, with notes of fig and raisin, layers of luxuriant cocoa, and a solid backbone of hoppy bitterness. After a full year in East End’s cellar, Gratitude (2020) is smoother, richer, and more decadent than ever.

Aside from internet trading forums, where the barleywine faithful offer up their cellars in hopes of securing a sip, this is the first time Gratitude has ever been available outside of Pittsburgh. And, that’s something you can really be thankful for.

Gratitude is the #12 American Barleywine in the World on BeerAdvocate!

Think this one would be better aged further. Loads of hops still with just a hint of plum sweetness. Have to rate it as I see it when drank tho, and at this point it’s not great.
