A Note on This Beer
Sequels rarely best the original, but even the Godfather had a Part II.
Twice winning World Beer Cup Gold and holding near perfect community ratings, Ballast Point’s Sculpin IPA is a brewing masterpiece that helped define the West Coast IPA. But some say Ballast’s Grapefruit Sculpin beats the original. With a score of 99 on RateBeer and 96 on BeerAdvocate, it has the community fervor to become its own timeless classic.
In a recent blind taste test, a panel of certified tasters and brewers at Paste Magazine judged over 100 American IPAs. Sculpin IPA, unshockingly, rated highly at #20. Ballast’s Grapefruit Sculpin version was #3.
Grapefruit Sculpin intensifies the award-winning original by infusing the brew with fresh grapefruit rind. The mango, apricot, and heavily citrus hopped bill of Sculpin are amplified to perfection with the grapefruit. The aroma is intoxicating, the flavor seducing. Grapefruit rind brings a backbone of bitter to the hops, before gliding into a mellowing sweet tang and dry finish.
For those who already adore Sculpin, the Grapefruit edition elevates pure citrus intensity to an entirely new level. Do a side by side and taste the difference! Now freshly available for the first time in crushable cans, it’s more convenient, and far less awkward, than pocketing an actual grapefruit.
