A Note on This Beer
Regardless of any superstitions you may hold this time of year, it’s a lucky thing to cross paths with today’s black cat-adorned can!
Behind that feline face lurks a rarely-seen Double-decocted Black Bock — an American iteration of a German Bockbier that flows with relaxing caramel undertones and roasty coffee notes!
To craft it, the multi-GABF medalists at Wayfinder Beer used hefty doses of Munich and roasted malts, and boiled it twice to develop the malts’ character and depth. Then, they fermented the Bock on their secret heritage Lager yeast at “extremely cold temperatures” to ensure no flavors were lost. Finally, they let the brew mature for an extended period before canning to really seal in the complexity.
The result is Funeral Bock, an obsidian pour that greets the senses with whispers of clove and freshly-made coffee. On the tongue, it streams smoothly, brimming with flavors of toasted bread, brown sugar, and espresso. Dark cherry and plum notes wash into a crisp, satisfyingly dry finish.
Local tasters are calling the brew “black silk” and “spectacularly smooth and mellow!”
But, this black cat only comes prowling around in Autumn. Just in time for Halloween!
In addition to their GABF hardware, Wayfinder is sitting on a stack of impressive awards from The New School, including Best Brewpub and Brewery of the Year!
