It's the very first year Fresh Fest has gone digital!
For the uninitiated, this is the nation’s first Black-owned beer festival and #2 Best Beer Festival in the Nation, according to USA Today.
The annual event showcases some of the country’s most talented Black brewers, along with Pittsburgh-based brewers in collaboration with Black artists, entrepreneurs, and business owners. These imaginative partnerships include brewing, label design, and/or food pairings for new beers released exclusively at Fresh Fest.
It seeks to economically empower the Black community by promoting and providing access, opportunities, and representation in a $79B industry with less than 1% Black ownership or employment.
Festival founder Day Bracey says he’s excited for what the future holds and hopes to continue to celebrate and empower the Black business and arts communities. Today’s beer bundle is an opportunity to sample delicious beer and share in the excitement!
There are two cans each of the 7 collaboration brews included:
Four City (Orange, NJ) x Shubrew (Pittsburgh, PA) - Brewers Gonna Work It Out - Dark Ale with Oreo Cookies - 9% ABV - 16oz can - packaged on 8/4/20
Four City is known for being forward-thinking and Shubrew’s name is synonymous with brewing with innovative adjuncts.
Together, they designed a beer as creative as it is delicious. To make it, Four City provided the base recipe from their Dark Ale and Shubrew brought the dessert to the table — they added 50 lbs of Oreo cookies, 10 lbs of locally-roasted coffee beans, 10 lbs of raw cacao, and a heaping dose of vanilla extract. The result is an indulgent Dark Ale that drinks like a Pastry Stout.
War Cloud (Pomona, CA) x Dancing Gnome (Pittsburgh, PA) - Wise Words DIPA - 8% ABV - 16oz can - packaged on 7/31/20
War Cloud designed the wise owl on the label with intricate feathers made from hops. The brewery created the art and helped come up with the beer name around the theme “wise words” — something the brewers’ think is lacking in this country lately. They’re intention is to draw awareness to the importance of word choice, especially in today’s ever-challenging times.
Dancing Gnome brought some serious hop skills into the mix as one of USA Today’s Top 3 New Breweries in the Country. Together, they fully saturated this 8% ABV Hazy Double IPA with the pungent oils of Strata, Nelson, Enigma, and Citra Hops. It tastes like dank lychee, white grape, Mandarin Orange, and mango kush.
White Lion (Springfield, MA) x Grist House (Pittsburgh, PA) - Fight The Sour - Sour Ale - 6.5% ABV - 16oz can - packaged on 8/5/20
White Lion was the first craft brewery in Springfield, Massachusetts. More than a brewery, they serve as a catalyst for revitalization of the city. Tasting their beers is revitalizing, too — so they make excellent teammates for the flavor scientists at Grist House.
The two breweries drew inspiration for this Sour from the Bramble cocktail — a gin-based drink made with lemon juice, simple syrup, and blackberry liqueur.
The beer version is just as complex but way more crushable! To craft it, the brew crew fermented on a bed of blackberry puree, then aged it on crushed juniper berries. Finally, they added just enough real lemon juice to balance it out. This beer-cocktail would fit nicely on any high-end speakeasy’s menu.
Union Craft (Baltimore, MD) x Butler (Butler, PA) - Satellite Surfer New England IPA - 7.5% ABV - 16oz can - packaged on 8/5/20
For the Union Craft crew, their hearts belong to Baltimore as much as to craft beer. So, this year’s Fresh Fest was a great opportunity to represent their city while swapping knowledge with the hop veterans at PA’s Butler Brew Works.
Together, they make some serious waves across the tongue with their Satellite Surfer IPA. They brewed this Hazy IPA with Strata, Comet, and Galaxy Hops and added coriander during fermentation to give the beer an even bigger citrus nose with notes of fresh pear, pineapple, and a hint of sandalwood. A soft, wavy malt body lays down the base and allows the hops to be the star of this beer. Mild fruitiness in the taste, with an earthy after-note of freshly clipped spruce tips. Brewer Zandy has described the color of Satellite Surfer as: Sun-bleached khaki-umber, washed upon a canvas of dutch white clover & honey mead. We’ll let you decide!
Rhythm (New Haven, CT) x Cinderlands (Pittsburgh, PA) - Rhythm in the Lands Dry Hopped Pilsner - 4.7% ABV - 16oz can, packaged on 8/5/20
When Alisa “Lady Lager” Bowens-Mercado, founder of Rhythm, announced she was opening a brewery specializing in Lagers in the juicebomb kingdom of New England, people told her she was crazy.
Now, The New Haven Register credits her as the first African American woman brewing beer in Connecticut! And, Rhythm has been at the forefront of a Lager revitalization movement in the region. The Cinderlands’ hop masters teamed up with Rhythm and amp’d up this Lager with potent, floral lemon meringue, and dank grapefruit aromas from dry-hopping with Centennial and Comet Hops.
Green Bench (St. Petersburg, FL) x Four Points (Charleroi, PA) - Between You and I Czech Pilsner - 4.5% ABV - 16oz can - packaged on 8/17/20
Like many of the breweries featured in the fest, Green Bench strives to be a modern-day catalyst for community and cheer. They make beer for people to congregate around, share in both good times and bad, discuss business or tell a joke, reminisce about life or dream about the future, to get up and dance to the music or to just sit back, relax, and enjoy.
They joined forces with the refreshment-focused Four Points to craft this clean, crisp Czech Pils that pairs as well with savory food as it does with any of the activities Green Bench promotes.
Alematic (Huber Heights, OH) x Eleventh Hour (Pittsburgh, PA) - Clock With No Hands Black Sour Ale with blackberry and black currant - 6.6% ABV - 16oz can - packaged on 8/7/20
The music loving Alematic — whose name is inspired by the Nas album — is only 18 months old. So, it’s inspiring to see how dialed-in their delicious Sour Ales already are. For Fresh Fest, they were fittingly paired up with the Sour wizards at Eleventh Hour, and decided to take the Black theme to multiple dimensions with their Clock With No Hands Black Sour Ale.
They brewed it with marshmallows and lactose and a TON of blackberries and black currants. Its mild hints of chocolate, mellow marshmallow, and big berry punch has the power to liven up your taste buds and knock your socks off! Your eyes may deceive you with its deep, almost black-purple appearance, but this is fruit-soaked all the way!
