About This Beer
Imagine the love child of an unapologetically tart Sour Ale and a nice cup of chai tea from your favorite cafe — that’s Excelsior Chai. Like all children, this brew-baby shares something with each of its folks without being too similar to either one.
The award-winning teams at Crooked Stave and Schilling Cider got together to forge this barrel-aged beauty. They added the apples and chai tea to a Sour Ale base, then aged the Cider-accented beer in oak barrels for two years.
Tasting Notes
It begins with a granny-smith-like acidity from excelsior apples, then flows into a medley of peppery spices. Notes of cinnamon, clove, and a hint of cardamom thrum with earthy, oaky nuances all the way to the dry finish.
