Double Oaked Mastodon (2021)
A Note on This Beer
Thousands of years ago, huge, hairy beasts roamed North America, dwarfing the other creatures with their sheer size.
They’re known as mastodons, a close relative of mammoths. Experts believe they went extinct at the end of the Pleistocene period, but Rhinegeist Brewery just unveiled a modern-age mastodon in Ohio!
Their Double Oaked Mastodon is just as big and bodacious as those beasts that stomped through America’s ancient forests and plains! To bring the majestic leviathan to life, Rhinegeist began with their Belgian Strong Dark Ale, beloved for its chocolate malt complexity and banana smoothie-like esters.
Then, they gave it some serious muscle — the brewers first let the Ale slumber for 12 months in freshly emptied New Riff Bourbon barrels, imbuing it with prominent notes of caramel and woody spice. Then, they moved Mastodon into red wine barrels for another 4 months, where it soaked up hints of ripe plum and faint blackberry, along with a tannic dryness.
This limited-release behemoth is a sight to behold! It won Gold Medals at the US Open Beer Championships and the Commonwealth Cup, and fans today are still smitten by its vinous character and rich, Belgiany bones.
When our stash is gone, you won’t find this living fossil roaming around your state, we can guarantee that.
*Paste Magazine named Rhinegeist one of the Top 50 American Breweries of the past decade!

Nice thick sweetness with dark fruits. On the sweet side, which is normal for this style. The bourbon and red wine barrel aging is what makes this one stand out for me.
Complex of pure deliciousness flavors and not afraid of the boozy it brings.
Spectacular barrel blending of the bourbon and wine. Very good.
Would loved to have tried it but Tavour screwed up the order and I got a refund
Super complex, multilayered flavor. Loved everything about it
My DOM pour looked nothing like this pic. Mine appeared to be a flat brown ale ... zero head retention and three shades lighter brown. Thin mouthfeel. Didn't live up to the name.
Not my type of beer
Creative barrel aging but the tastes don’t seem to mesh
Dark, syrupy and toasty. Good beer. Pretty booze.
Came looking for a beer. What I got was low grade Bourbon. Very overwhelming. But even though it isn't for me, it is probably good for many others.
Missed the chocolate flavors. Wine-barrel aging very apparwnt and ale is strongly tannic/wine flavored.
This beer is perfect! We are going to attempt to create a beer like this at our brewery.
balanced, mild sweetness with some nice barrel aged notes on the finish. excellent beer!
Brother and I enjoyed the hell out of this.
This beer is amazing and I would definitely buy this again. This beer is super boozy, the tons of ripe fruit and molasses, with lots of tiny bubbles.
I’m really glad I shared this one. Otherwise, I would’ve been wiped out!
please bring this one back again
Strong and good
Belgian and tannic flavors dominate. Really good.
wow. really different and great. lots of wine, dark fruit, plenty of bourbon
Delish Rolls with the usual Belgian culprits while adding the sweetness and char from the barrels
smooth rich flavor…booze is just right
Dark and thick fruitiness with a wonderful bourbon kick. Definitely a potent brew; heavy but a well-balanced flavor
