Allagash Brewing Company
A Note on This Beer
I’d do just about anything for a bottle from Allagash’s Coolship series.
Walk, hitchhike, stow away in a boxcar — whatever it takes to get up to Portland, Maine. And, I know plenty of you feel the same way. We’ve shared three previous beers from the series, and you’ve rated all of them 4+ on Tavour!
Today’s tart, ruby-hued Coolship Red is made in (you guessed it!) a coolship — a long tank with no top that allows native, wild yeast to fall into the wort as it cools. No other yeast is added, so when you drink it, you’re tasting the natural microbes straight from the crisp Maine air.
Then, the brewers age the brew in oak wine barrels for over two years before finally adding 100 lbs of locally picked raspberries per barrel! After another 4-5 months of resting on the fruit, it’s finally ready.
When it comes out of those barrels, it’s bright red and tangy tart, with just a hint of wild funk. Bold berry flavors burst from every sip, along with subtle nuances of apricot, lemon grass, and a hearty note of oak.
Today, you don’t have to hightail it to The Pine Tree State, but you do have to be quick. If the last three versions are any indication, our stash of Coolship Red won’t last long.
*Careful with that cork! This naturally carbonated brew can pack some real pop!

Very tart,dry, and effervescent
Raspberry funk with a tart, dry finish. Was surprised to read it was naturally fermented and carbonated, the carbonation was pretty strong giving a crispness to it. Very enjoyable!
