A Note on This Beer

Today is one of those days I live for, as a craft fan — a day when I don’t know whether to be more excited about the beer, or the brewery!

I’ll start with the beer. Packed with chocolate malts, cacao nibs, and late-season red raspberries from a local Virginia farm, Bourbon Barrel Raspberry Stout with Vanilla Beans (2021) is a desserty sipper right out of the gate!

Maturing in bourbon barrels adds drizzles of molasses notes to the berry-chocolate torte-like decadence; finishing on Madagascar vanilla beans gives it a dollop of whipped cream. At 11.5% ABV, it comes with a booziness to keep you smiling long after the bottle is empty.

Then, there’s the brewery. Even in the beer-saturated Mid-Atlantic, Hardywood Park stands out. Their big, bold brews routinely land on “Best of” and “Must-try” lists from the likes of VinePair, Paste Mag, Hop Culture, and the Wall Street Journal.

Just last year, Thrillist declared Hardywood the Best Brewery in Richmond. That’s even more impressive when you consider Thrillist named the area “America’s Beer City,” thanks to the high amount of nationally recognized breweries!

Whether you’re more excited about getting your hands on a coveted beer from an esteemed brewery or sipping down its luscious flavors, one thing’s for certain — this is one Stout-sipping experience meant to be savored.

With Tavour, it's easy to beer it forward! Just head over to Tavour.com/gifts to send a gift box or gift card to the craft beer lover in your life. Cheers!

The raspberry somehow manages to both overpower and compete with the roasted notes of the stout causing a very medicinal taste. Not much vanilla or bourbon coming through, though they might be muddling with the raspberry and causing the unpleasant taste.

It’s no Jam The Radar, but at this price it’s a steal. Smell is all raspberry and barrel. The taste of the raspberries along with the bourbon give the overall impression of a raspberry medicine. The vanilla plays a background note, but loses its shyness as it warms up. I think the right bourbon would’ve let this beer shine. In this case, there was a mismatch. Still 11.5%, BBA with rasp, nibs, and vanilla for $8.

Way too much oak. Flavor was roast forward. Not my jam.

Chocolate dipped raspberries are good when done right, and this is a good attempt. Boozy, sweet, with just enough tartness to make it fun. Nice work, Hardywood!

Doesn’t know if it wants to be a stout or a porter

The raspberry is very strong, but I love that that the flavor is natural, not like candy. The roasted and chocolate malt put up a good fight, though. Almost perfect. Little less raspberry would do it for me. Vanilla was subdued.

throw some raspberries in as a garish and it’s perfect! Great taste!

Aroma is strong raspberry on top of soft bourbon. Light notes of chocolate. Flavor has roasted malt backbone with plenty of full rich raspberry. The bourbon rounds out the flavors and has a soft warming in the finish. Bourbon also cuts the sweetness

I don’t usually enjoy thin Stouts. I do however love Bourbon BA Stouts. To me, this was a perfect balance and not too bitter. I really liked it. More than I expected to.

One of the best bourbon barrel stouts I’ve ever had. You can really taste the raspberry.

Big coffee and licorice notes first, slowly fading to chocolate, smokey wood, and then finally sweet raspberry and vanilla. Delicious combo of flavors that ticks every box.

Too many raspberries and not enough chocolate or molasses. More of a Johnny One Note than anything else.

Taste like raspberry tootsie rolls. This great if you like raspberries and tootsie rolls, and not-so-much if you don’t. The raspberry is overwhelming. If I had this again I’d split the 12 oz bottle with someone else. Alcohol is well hidden for 11.5%.

It’s fine. The raspberry flavor has kind of an artificial tang to it.

this one was off for me. the raspberry and vanilla were there but it was missing the barrel aged profile that I’ve become accustomed to from other Tavour offerings.

the barrel vanilla and char is up front with the middle being coffee, raspberry and vanilla, but this finish is so bitter and Tannic it takes away from the rest of the beer. not bad, but I put it over ice cream which made it significantly better

Raspberry VERY pronounced, not so much the vanilla Bourbon barrel comes off straight oak without the layers of nuance Still good stuff regardless, flourless chocolate cake with raspberry reduction
