Bourbon Barrel Raspberry Stout With Vanilla Beans (2020)
Hardywood Park Craft Brewery
A Note on This Beer
Today is one of those days I live for as a craft fan — a day where I don’t know whether to be more excited about the beer, or the brewery!
I’ll start with the beer. Packed with chocolate malt, cacao nibs, and late-season red raspberries from a local Virginia farm, Bourbon Barrel Raspberry Stout with Vanilla Beans (2020) is a desserty sipper right out of the gate!
Maturing in bourbon barrels adds drizzles of molasses notes to the berry chocolate torte-like decadence, while finishing on Madagascar vanilla beans gives it a dollop of whipped cream. At 11.5% ABV, it comes with a booziness to keep you smiling long after the bottle is empty.
Then, there’s the brewery. Even in the beer-saturated Mid-Atlantic, Hardywood Park stands out. Their big, boozy brews routinely land on “Best of” and “Must-try” lists from the likes of VinePair, Paste Mag, Hop Culture, and the Wall Street Journal.
And just last year, Thrillist declared Hardywood the Best Brewery in Richmond. That’s even more impressive when you consider Thrillist named the area “America’s Beer City,” thanks to the high amount of nationally recognized breweries!
Whether you’re more excited about getting your hands on a coveted beer from an esteemed brewery or sipping down its luscious flavors, one thing’s for certain — this is one Stout-sipping experience meant to be savored.
*This Stout won a GABF Gold Medal!

Not big into the Chocolate/Rasberry thing but I buy almost anything from Hardywood. And they really nailed the he flavoring here. Tastes like you’re drinking a chocolate covered raspberry, the barrel flavors hit you first, and you get a nice sweet taste of raspberry midway through, and a strong dark chocolate taste lingers after you’ve finished. Well done.
Boozy raspberry taste.
Interesting. I liked the vanilla, but didn't feel the raspberry necessarily worked.
I’m not a fan of anything with raspberries in it, and this one is no exception. Still a fan of Hardywood, however, which is why I took a chance on this one.
Very berry. Unique and enjoyable.
Not bad but not for me! Very thick and you definitely taste the chocolate covered raspberry’s!!!
Hot and tart
Solid stout with raspberry. Not a ton of vanilla.
I like that it’s not sticky. A little bit of tartness. Wasn’t blown away, but a solid barrel aged stout.
This was so good. Velvety notes of chocolate and vanilla and the raspberry really ties it all together. So so so good.
Does what it says on the box. Especially the raspberry part.
Raspberry was very flavor forward, but I could also taste the bourbon flavors as well. Pretty good. Very strong.
Probably the best this beer could ever be. The raspberry almost has a wine quality to it. It's really balanced for houw complex and unruly this beer could have been. Very impressed, these guys know what they're doing
Crap, raspberry, band-aid
Strong raspberry upfront, with a subtle vanilla -- almost marshmallow -- aftertaste
OM NOM NOM. Sweet raspberries atop a strong chocolate-vanilla-forward thick barrel-aged stout. So happy I bought 3 of these!
This works better than I thought it would. Booze bomb
Wanted to like this more than I did as I love their beers but the raspberry just didn't melt with the base beer in my opinion
So smooth! Wonderful bottle and a deep, creamy, boozy beer.
Some was not right about this. Tasted watered down. Maybe a bad bottle?
Not a fan of wet dog taste
Smells like rotten meat
Not sure I like the raspberry combo but overall a good offering
Meh, doesn't meld well, flavors not great
Thin, Artificial rasberry
Great raspberry nose. Good raspberry bourbon initial flavor. Sadly turns to a raspberry medicine finish.
Was ok, fake medicinal fruit flavor
Strong raspberry nose with a dark solid appearance. Head retention is strong and lasted throughout drinking. Chocolate, oak, and vanilla notes blend with the strong raspberry to make for a bold yet enjoyable experience.
Outstanding! Poor reviews on here are puzzling, as this is a 4.1 on Untappd as of April 2021. REAL raspberries were used from a farm, so nothing artificial about this one. Strong raspberry on nose and taste. The chocolate just lingers pleasantly on the palette with each sip.
Very fake tasting, disappointed, usually sold stuff by hardy wood
Fantastic smell but flavor not as good. Feels like it needs something else to help smooth it out.
Enjoyed the flavor; raspberry really came through. Not much barrel and rather thin
