Bourbon Barrel Aged Dark Star: Chocolate Vanilla Maple Syrup (2019)
A Note on This Beer
The Travel Channel placed Seattle in their Top 10 Cities For Beer Snobs. It’s a must-visit destination on every beer geek’s bucket list.
And, after living in the thick of this brew mecca for many years, we can tell you that fads come and go. But, you know what's NOT a fad? Fremont’s thicker-than-a-Snickers Barrel-Aged Dark Star. It's been a must-try Seattle beer for years!
If you’re really lucky (and today, you are), you’ll get a shot at one of BBADS’ sought-after variants. Probably the most complex is Chocolate-Vanilla-Maple Syrup Bourbon Barrel-Aged Dark Star 2019 vintage!
Imagine a booze-spiked, chocolate-vanilla swirl ice cream cone topped with a maple glaze, and you’ll get an idea of what’s in store. It’s rated a mesmerizing 4.45 on Untappd, and fans are calling out the savage 13.1% ABV Stout as:
“Incredibly well balanced and complex. Not sweet but roasty, with hints of all the ingredients.” @JimH.
“Really good, like all their BA stuff is known to be. Maple leaves a bit of sugary coating all over your mouth, but it’s JUST shy of being too sweet.” @Gootooroobloo
We’d call it trade bait, except we don’t see many beer geeks willing to part with it yet!
To get a crack at this hyper-limited, decadent dessert without trading away the most valuable beer in your cellar, we’ve got your hook-up right here!

Smooth and creamy, with a hint of smoke. Pairs so well with red meats.
Decadent and delicious
Best BA I have had from this brewery. All good here
Fremont does so well with their adjuncts and their stouts are always really good.
Ok now we’re talking. I get all the adjuncts.
Awesome beer! Hit every note
Great stout but was missing those adjunct flavors
Solid as always
Great stout. Great body. Mouthfeel. Chocolate and maple shine.
So smooth & chocolatety for 13%!
These Fremont beers don't age well.
Vanilla, maple, chocolate
Very smooth. Not thick but rich. Well done barrel with the maple syrup and some cocoa. Yum.
This is how barrel aged adjunct stouts are supposed to be! Every adjunct is there, along with the bourbon, barrel and imperial stout flavors one would expect all without making it overly sweet. Well done!
This beer is the best chocolate barrel aged beer I have ever had! To me this beer would be a cross between Sierra Nevada’s barrel aged Norwall and goose islands barreled age Bourbon Stout. It is very smooth and very creamy as it sits and gets to room temperature it almost taste like a chocolate milk. The maple is on the nose very heavy and as it sits and gets to room temperature the maple does come forward in every sip.
Very well made with a lot of flavor and personality but Too dark and chewy for my personal taste
Spectacular. A perfect balance of flavors and a boozy punch without being harsh. All the best parts of a stout
Balanced. Great flavor without big booze or hot alcohol.
Bourbon, maple, coco, vanilla, toffee, goodness!!!! Man this is a good beer!!!
Best Dark Star I've had yet. Chocolate is dominant with just the touch of maple.
I can’t lie. I was disappointed. Not worth the price. I was expecting more.
Perfect blend. Get all the flavors with a great barrel.
Out f'n standing. KO by Fremont! Never passnon this beer
Bit thinner and less pastry than expected, but enjoyable
So good. The refinement is noticed. Smooth with a nice sweet but not overly done finish. Very well done.
Light on maple, but overall quite tasty.
Really well balanced
