Imagine the best players in the NFL pointing to Aaron Rogers or Tom Brady and saying ‘this guy is football.’ That’s basically what’s happening when some of the biggest breweries in Portland, Oregon point to Hair of the Dog’s Blue Dot and say, ‘this beer is the DIPA.’
Fans agree - saying it’s an original DIPA in every sense of the word and its smooth fruity complexity sits in their memory banks long after the glass is empty. So what’s the secret? Believe it or not, it’s the grain.
With world-class releases like Adam and Fred, internationally famous brewmaster Alan Sprints has achieved a well-deserved reputation as a master of malts. So what does a malt legend do with the Double IPA? Alan supports his Northwest hop flavors with a strong backbone of house organic Pilsner malt and a hefty dose of rye.
Blue Dot pours a cloudy peach-orange—much more opaque than most DIPAs. Hop aromas of pine, grapefruit and mango jump out of the glass while rye and pale malt notes lurk in the background. From start to finish, it’s an unusually smooth ride. Up front, peppery rye spice blends with lemon zest, raw honey and subtle tropical notes, giving way to biscuit-like pilsner malt flavors. The finish is dry and gently bitter, as piney hops and earthy rye malt blend together so seamlessly that it’s nearly impossible to differentiate them.
Fabled Blue Dot sits on a pedestal all its own while being a highly rated staple throughout the Northwest beerscape. You don't want to miss out on seeing a world-class pro athlete perform on the field and if you’re an IPA fan, you don’t want to miss out on the flavorful performance of this DIPA.
