A Note on This Beer

One taste of today’s sinfully-smooth Black Metal Farmhouse Imperial Stout, and you’ll completely understand why fans say it’s “in a league of its own.”

But, if you’re sitting there wondering, “what the hell is a Farmhouse Imperial Stout anyway?” it's because this is the only one that exists.

It’s a unique, boundary-breaking style that the Wild Ale legends at Austin’s Jester King invented in 2011!

And it’s basically a Russian Imperial Stout that they ferment with farmhouse yeast. The result is a jet-black pour that is equal parts bold, funky, bitter, and of course, boozy as hell at 10.4% ABV.

Enticing aromas of toasty malts and burnt molasses greet the nose. Bittersweet baker’s chocolate and heavy notes of tobacco mingle with vinous cherry undertones on the palate from Jester King’s famed open fermentation process and wild yeast cultures. Espresso roastiness and a blast of char lead the way to a bone-dry finish, prepping your mouth for another luxurious sip.

Seasonally released with a different recipe for each batch, Black Metal is your one-way ticket to a tastebud-tantalizing adventure like no other. Seriously, even the most metal of your Dark Beer lovin’ buds have probably never tasted anything quite as nuanced and complex as this one-of-a-kind brew!

It’s not often that you get to taste a beer as unforgettable as this, and especially from the folks that are responsible for introducing the Farmhouse style to the U.S.

So go ahead, let loose a head-bang or two for scoring these prized bottles. You deserve it.

Last year’s variant was rated 90/100 on BeerAdvocate.

Nice bretty stout. Chocolate and coffee intertwine with dark cherry acidity and some funk. Very interesting!

I haven’t had a lot of experience with the style, but I could definitely try some more after this

Very, very interesting beer. Almost a drain pour, but decided against it. If you look at what this beer is, technically, it is what it says it is. But it is definitely not a crowd pleaser and would be a beer for those who love the technicalities and intricacies of craft beer. I love farmhouse. I love imperial stouts. Bone dry beers are ok to me. But the most important question I think about when drinking beer is: would I recommend this beer to a friend? Or Would I buy this beer again? In both instances, the answer is no.

Funky and not really my thing. I’m sure there’s a huge audience for this though.
