A Note on This Beer
We won’t bore you with an academic discussion of the magic science of alpha acids. Here’s what you really need to know about them: they’re the glorious juices that make hops bitter. And Hop Valley Brewing Company, with some of the best hop scientists on staff, chooses a masterful combination of hops for their flagship IPA, Alphadelic.
True to its name, Alphadelic achieves powerful bitterness through the unlikely selection of two high-alpha hops, Nugget and Chinook.
Clocking in at a staggering 90 IBU, it’s uncommonly bitter for an easy-drinking, 6.7% ABV IPA. Setting Nugget and Chinook hops against a simple backbone of Western 2-Row and Munich malts makes this possible. These two hops give Alphadelic all the piney hop carnage of Black Raven’s Wisdom Seeker DIPA and more…at a much lower ABV.
Pineapple, tangerine, grapefruit, mango and huge pine resin aromas herald a Northwest hop bomb of epic proportions. The experience of bitterness is all-consuming: it crashes your palate from the get-go and stays for the long haul, beginning with a rush of evergreen. Notes of honeydew melon, peach, lemon, fresh-cut grass and green apple emerge in the mid-body before being body-slammed by a quenching blast of citrusy bitterness.
You don’t need to get technical to appreciate Hop Valley’s brilliant use of alpha acids. You don’t need to know what “Alphadelic” means—but you’ll definitely understand it after you try this wild ride of bitterness.
