A Note on This Beer

With massive 17% ABV’s and huge, bold flavors in each highly-limited release, Five Threads’ 5X series always blows our tops off.

But, holy cow! Today’s brand-new release is the first Wheatwine rendition we’ve ever seen from those California masterminds — and it’s a Blonde Wheatwine at that!

If you’re wondering why the style alone is so hype-worthy, Wheatwine is a rarer style meant for experimentation. It’s smooth and velvety, like a Barleywine, but the wheat base creates a much softer body. The sweeter profile already makes it ideal for showcasing a plethora of flavorful nuances, and today’s lightly malty Blonde version does just that.

Snag a sip, and you’ll taste what we mean. Pineapple upside-down cake aromas greet the nose upfront, paving the way for rich notes of clover honey, luxardo cherries, and dried mango. Yum!

The finish is luxurious, like a caramel-drizzled flan cake, deftly masking the boozy strength. Better savor this one slowly!

Even so, you might want to grab an extra can. Who knows when — or if — we’ll see this exceptional stuff again.

Not awesome, but not bad. Lots of dried cherry/date/amaretto.

Good malt flavor, not nearly as hot as the ABV or IBU suggests. Good chewy caramel body. Good but not that sophisticated.

A bit boozy but very smooth. I'm not usually a fan of malty flavors but this is great.

can't say I really enjoyed this, but I didn't dislike it, hit me like a truck so that's a plus, even if it's to be expected.

sweet and caramel like. A little heat but nothing like you'd expect from a 17% beer. My second beer from this brewery and was not disappointed.

Insane 17% ABV hidden behind sweet decadent malt, but with high bitterness. This beer is trying to have it all, and it’s doing a fair job of it…

Nice malt backbone. Shockingly smooth for 17% ABV. Liquid toffee.

High-alcohol, high-hops blonde ale. Strangely malty for a blonde ale. I’d drink it again.

Five Threads Brewing Company 5x Blond. This bear has a strong grainy profile with a slight caramel sweetness that intermingles with a solid malt character. Hints of pine hops are present at the end but the high ABV keeps the bitterness level low. This beer is dangerously smooth for a 17% ABV
