A Note on This Beer
Skip the Herds. Skip the Lines. Skip the Hype and Buzz.
Seek out Portland, Oregon’s criminally underrated Columbia River Brewing and you’ll find the only buzz that matters: the resinous tickle of a hop-focused DIPA.
In a city rich with breweries, Columbia River invests in crafting elite brews rather than ad campaigns. They are an underground gem with two World Beer Cup Medals and an iconic, lean and mean War Elephant DIPA.
War Elephant outshines many more publicized brews with whole fields of hoppy flavor and refreshingly light body. Its “moderate” 8.5% ABV allows the brewers to use less malts and focus on bringing out the hoppy side of the DIPA. With big ‘C’ hops including Centennial, Cascade and two dry hop blends, War Elephant crashes into your tongue with an aromatic hoppy stomp. You’ll feel tingly for several minutes once you’ve dismounted just like after a good roller coaster ride.
With golden lustre and sheen, War Elephant trumpets its arrival. The double dry hopping reveals a banquet of tropical fruits from mangoes to pineapples. Once you start to ride this beast of a DIPA, the hops immediately begin to slap your tongue with the bitterness of unsweetened grapefruit, enhanced by a touch of lemons and spearmint. Hops grace the tongue once again on their departure with a lingering resonance of pine.
There’s no need to tread on the beaten path when you can blaze your own with this hoppy beast. Discover one of Portland’s great hidden breweries through War Elephant, their smooth drinking, loveable West Coast DIPA behemoth.
