Jester King Brewery
A Note on This Beer
I completely nerd out whenever I share a bottle of Jester King with a friend who’s never tried them before. JK’s beers are so complex, their brewing process so intricate, their 165-acre Austin ranch so epic, there’s never a shortage of things to gab about when it comes to the Kings.
With 8 of BeerAdvocate’s Top 75 Wild Ales in The World, Jester King attracts herds of beer pilgrims to their Texas taproom for each release. I love to show people pictures of their vineyards, because it’s so unique to see a brewery that grows their own wine grapes!
With today’s Vague Recollection, Jester King pairs their Wild Ale finesse with the rich fruitiness of Tempranillo and Sangiovese grapes, producing a slow-sipper that combines woody farmhouse funk with plummy, rosey, watermelon and sweet grape flavors — the kind of stuff that always gets Wild Ale fans as jazzed as the wine barrel-aged geeks.
The last time members got a little taste they scored Vague Recollection at 4.22! So when we got a crack at this year’s batch, we knew we’d never hear the end of it if we didn’t share the opportunity.
This Wild Ale opens with a perfume of roses and sour red cherries from Sangiovese grapes, and then develops into a pleasant blend of tart grape and Bretty stone fruit funk.
By using pomace (the spent skins and stems that come from pressing grapes) instead of the full juice, Jester King is able to showcase vinous grape flavors without overwhelming the beer’s subtle Wild Ale base. A gentle, dry finish cleans your palate and makes Vague Recollection a wonderful accompaniment to a buttery French cassoulet or a pungent cheese plate.
I’d love to tell you more about how Jester King is a legit farmhouse brewery and how their authentic creativity results in authentic Wild Ales. I’d love to tell you more, but I’ve got some friends in town who absolutely need to try Vague Recollection, so I’ll catch the rest of y’all later.
