A Note on This Beer
When Stone took their highly rated Russian Imperial Stout off the docket after 16 years as a fan favorite, they heard impassioned calls of dissent. That dissent grew into a roar and now, after a 12 month hiatus, they breathe new life into this roasty, bitter classic with the addition of melony Belma Hops and Flaked Oats: meet Totalitarian Imperial Russian Stout.
This 10.6% ABV sinful delight delivers the same dark cocoa and coffee bitterness you know and love, but brings a new dimension of flavor with fruity-citrusy undertones from Belma Hops. Totalitarian earns a 4.03 rating on Untappd with users like @Torsten praising its inspired revival: “Has a hop flavor that reminds of fresh strawberries and raspberries on the palate. It's like a nice summer drinking RIS.”
Pouring jet black, rich aromas of dark chocolate and cherries float off your snifter and draw you in. Bittersweet cocoa, fresh roasted coffee, dark fruits, and a subtle hint of dry char on the palate are signals of a true-to-form RIS. But another sip reveals a new world hoppy spin with an undercurrent of blackcurrants, chocolate-dipped Crenshaw melon, and grapefruit zest. Flaked Oats soften the mouthfeel, and Totalitarian spirals off into a pleasantly dry coda.
Take it from a Stone senior brewer: “Our most devout fans don’t surrender quietly when we discontinue beers… in this case, the one year hiatus was well worth the wait.” We have these rabid devotees to thank for this resurgence -- and Stone to thank for the boldly innovative, fruity hopped flavors of Totalitarian.
