A Note on This Beer
To build the ideal wild beer, the world’s premier gypsy brewer Mikkeller went to brew at the legendary Cantillon Brewery, home to the world’s finest Lambics. After a little experimentation, he developed his own renowned line of exotic fruit-infused Lambics.
One of the top rated releases of this rarely seen series is available today. Mikkeller's Spontancassis blends an oak-aged, Cantillon-inspired Wild Ale with tart black currants to create one of the most uniquely memorable barrel-aged brews of the season.
The berries provide Spontancassis with an enchanting purple amber hue and ample foam top. Aromas of both fresh and dried fruits combine to give delicious depth. Blueberries, wood, plums and raisins spring out of a supportive backing of tartness. Cranberry-like flavors populate the foreground before diving deep into the peppery, buttery vinous qualities of the wood barrels. Luxurious minerality accentuates crisp effervescence. Wood balances fruit enroute to clean, tart finish you won’t soon forget.
Spontancassis demonstrates how Wild Ales can enhance and pair well with both oak and fruit, making it a superb introduction to the style. Beware though - its richness may set the bar unfairly high for other Wilds that follow.
Aged for one year in bottles, Spontancassis is approaching perfect balance between mellow barrel and an outline of smooth tartness, impressing people who don’t usually appreciate sours. But with complexity matching other beers crafted at Cantillon, it will wow even the most veteran palates.
As requests for Wild Ales flood in, Spotancassis provides plenty of broadly appealing, top pedigree relief. An innovative brew from one of the best minds in craft beer, Spotancassis’s ability to fulfill Wild Ale cravings is only limited by the number you have in your cellar.
