A Note on This Beer
When it comes to aging, we don’t pay attention to health magazines—we trust what the brew masters have to say.
Boulevard Brewing’s Saison-Brett is one of those beers that deserves to be aged for just the right amount of time. As part of Boulevard’s acclaimed Smokestack Series, Saison-Brett sold out to distributors very quickly, so we had to get our hands on some as fast as we could. Now, we think this beer is ready to share.
2014’s edition of Saison-Brett shakes things up a bit: it provides a comprehensive sweep of yeast varieties, including Saison and Brettanomyces, along with the singular dry-hopped aromas of Amarillo. Built upon the widely-celebrated base of their Tank 7 Saison, this once-a-year release is so well-executed and so flavorful that even those unfamiliar with wild ales will become born-again Saison believers after trying it.
Saison-Brett pours a cloudy, golden yellow with a towering, frothy white head. Aromas of lemons and dusty Brettanomyces character entrance with a hint of spicy wheat. The funk of the Brett, lemon and orange zest of hops and light peppery notes of Saison yeast combine to create rich layers of refreshment. Bready barley and wheat tones round out a well-balanced and eminently drinkable Saison. The finish offers considerable hop bitterness and a pleasant, lingering dryness.
After a year of aging gracefully, Saison-Brett’s funk and citrus flavors have reached new heights. With unbeatable ratings of 100 on RateBeer and Beer Advocate, the world agrees: this is a Saison you absolutely must try.
