Port Love Shadow
A Note on This Beer
“One of the best breweries in Michigan, period. The end.”
Nope, it’s not Founders or Bell’s that Thrillist is talking about– it’s Brewery Vivant!
This Grand Rapids crew’s efforts to break the mold are exactly what’s getting them noticed. The brewers are “brew stewards” and their faithful followers are “monks.” Everything is run out of a refurbished historic chapel and funeral home. They specialize in barrel aging, but without strict timelines — “The beer tells us when it's ready, instead of the other way around.”
So get ready to step out of the ordinary with today’s Port Love Shadow Stout! For this Limited Series, Brewery Vivant took a small amount of their already popular Bourbon Barrel-Aged Love Shadow Imperial Stout and let it slumber in Port barrels for 12 whole months!
Turns out that second barrel nap worked some dark magic! This creamy, dark, fruity Stout has amassed a solid following and a 4.19 UT Rating. Here’s what the fans are saying:
“Rich, smooth, hits like a hammer” - Michael C.
“Sweet and dark...This was a great sipper but tough not to drink quickly!” - Tom H.
“Yes yes yes yes yes yes yes!” - Tim B.
We feel ya, Tim. Port Love Shadow is a full-bodied behemoth swimming with notes of vanilla, dark chocolate, dried fruit, cardamom spice and a kick of red wine. Deeper mouthfuls reveal subtle hints of charred oak and bourbon. The mind-walloping 9.8% ABV goes down easy because the Imperial Stout is so freakin’ smooth.
Brewery Vivant told us they won’t be re-creating this Port Barrel-Aged feat again anytime soon, so we’ve gone ahead and set aside a stash just for Tavour members! You may as well start calling yourself a monk.
