A Note on This Beer
Set aside the “Christmas beer” label for a second – Old Scrooge Christmas Ale is simply one of the best Strong Ales in the world, winning multiple Gold medals in its category.
A limited release barrel aged masterpiece, Old Scrooge’s rich fruit and malt flavors seem to invoke St. Bernardus’s fine Christmas Ale, but a substantial hop bite and unparalleled drinkability set it apart from other Quads or Strong Ales.
Best enjoyed in a tulip or brandy glass, Old Scrooge pours an irresistible dark ruby-brown. The nose reveals an inviting blend of fruit and caramel aromas –apples, cherries, apricots, raisins, plums and caramel are all prominent as a result of extended barrel aging and a unique fermentation process.
Old Scrooge traverses an exceptional range of flavors on the palate. Caramel, Munich and bready Northwest Pale Malts lead things off. A mélange of fruit flavors follows, briefly interrupted by a flash of 60 IBUs of Willamette and Columbus hops. The finish wraps fruits and malts together with warm, gently boozy bourbon notes. Share this with your neighbors at Christmas? Bah, humbug!
With a stellar collection of awards to its name, including a fresh Silver Medal at GABF and three Golds between GABF and the North American Beer Awards, Old Scrooge has been a part of Christmases past and present. And with great cellaring potential, Old Scrooge can also be the Strong Ale of Christmases yet to come.
But if you ask us, we think it’s aged to perfection right now.
