A Note on This Beer
A jigger of Bourbon, a slice of orange peel, a few dashes of spicy bitters--America has rediscovered their love of the Old Fashioned. We’ve sampled a few brews inspired by the original whiskey cocktail recently. One stands out from the rest:
Cismontane Brewing’s Old Fashion is a Bourbon Barrel Aged 11% ABV Imperial Wit, completely capturing the essence of the whiskey cocktail.
Aged in Bourbon Barrels for just shy of a year, the Old Fashion’s Wit base naturally inhabits the character of the cocktail, with notes of juicy orange and Angostura spices like coriander and clove. Kicked up to imperial strength, this Wit absorbs the boldness of barrel character, replicating the smooth boozy bite of bourbon.
Notes of tangerine juice and rind mimic the cocktails orange garnish, while Cismontane’s spice blend replicates the aromatic tones of craft bitters. But what truly sings of its cocktail namesake is the barrel mark on this Wit with notes of vanilla and strong oak. As it warms, the signature clean and dry finish of wheat takes on sweet maraschino cherry notes, a fitting garnish to this libation.
Rarely making it out of sunny SoCal, Cismontane’s beers have excited the community since the brewery opened six years ago. Few people know they had a hidden passion for liquor, which is leading them to open a small batch distillery. But before the distillery opens, they’re channeling this passion to faithfully recreate the Old Fashioned in this beer.
