A Note on This Beer
Belgian Ale fans will travel thousands of miles and spend thousands of dollars to get a taste of the legendary Trappist Ales of Westvleteren, including modern-day craftmasters like Mikkeller. So inspired by the rich flavors he tasted, Mikkeller decided to try and one-up Westvleteren -- and make an even better Belgian Ale.
The result became one of the Top 100 Belgian Ales of all time on BeerAdvocate. Aptly named Monk’s Brew, this 10% ABV Dark Belgian Ale is crafted in true Mikkeller fashion -- with a sense of gusto.
They take a great leap forward from Belgian expertise and infuse this temple of dark fruits and shaved cocoa with a secret ingredient: Brown sugar. But this brown sugar isn’t your grandma’s C&H brand stuff. Mikkeller takes two of the world’s most luxurious brown sugars, demerara and dark cassonade, to inject this silky boozebomb with deep sweetness.
Demerara’s natural caramelized taste and cassonade’s candied character intertwine with the famous Belgian yeast to create apricot, cherry, and date-infused flavors that are nothing short of Christmas cake in a bottle. Aromas of powdered baker’s cocoa and plums accentuate the nose. Toffee cherries and herbal caramel slide over the tongue, finishing with a brandied, yet surprisingly dry finish.
Inspired by Belgian masters but decidedly a work of a modern craft genius, Mikkeller’s Monk’s Brew is a dream come true for Belgian fans: It’s rich, it’s boozy, deliciously complex, and it beats the hell out of waiting in line somewhere in Belgium.
