A Note on This Beer
Jolly Pumpkin Ales is what some would call a “hipster brewery”. These guys perfected open fermentation, globally sourced ingredients, and oak barrel souring well before it was cool.
When Jolly Pumpkin opened in 2004, wild ales were virtually unheard of in the United States. That year, the brewery won a gold medal in the style at the GABF. Since then, wild ales and sour beers have exploded in the American market.
Jolly Pumpkin’s Maracaibo Especial, a bottle-conditioned winter seasonal, continues the brewery’s tradition of trend-setting. The beer itself is a result of modern globalization, integrating aspects of several different cultures in its ingredients and brewing process. It’s a specialty Belgian ale named after a city in Venezuela, brewed in Michigan with orange, cinnamon and cacao from all corners of the world.
Poured into a snifter or tulip glass, Maracaibo Especial is a delight to all the senses. This well-traveled beer has an immediately seductive aroma: a strong brettanomyces funk with chocolate aroma and light orange sweetness. Striking pear, sour cherries, and apple peel flavors are a pleasant surprise given Maracaibo Especial’s dark color. The finish is an unexpected treat, traveling from bright citrus notes to oak barrel funk and ending with a lingering, palate-coating raw cacao flavor.
After nine years of practice, it is no surprise that Jolly Pumpkin’s wild ales are a step above the rest. Maracaibo Especial is no exception. In spite of its complexity, this beer is nationally acclaimed for its drinkability.
Share this hip and worldly beer with your hip and worldly friends. Or, share with anyone who’s willing to try something new, and watch as they become more hip and worldly. :)
