Mamma's Candied Yams
Gun Hill Brewing Company
A Note on This Beer
My mother is a wonderful person who excels at many things. But cooking isn’t her strong suit.
There’s really only one dish that she can consistently knock out of the park, and it’s a holiday dessert: candied yams with pineapple. And the worst part is, when she makes it, the whole dish vanishes so fast that I’m left scraping the last bits out of the corners and licking the spoon for a taste!
That’s why this year, I’m bringing back-ups in the form of Mamma’s Candied Yams Imperial Amber Ale. It’s a Yam-ber Ale, and it tastes just as good as mom’s. Plus, it comes with a solid 8.5% ABV to help smooth over the whole holiday experience.
I might actually like Gun Hill’s version better than my mom’s! Please DO NOT tell her I said that.
To recreate all the aromas and flavors of a Thanksgiving classic, the GABF Gold Medalists at New York’s Gun Hill loaded up their Imperial Amber base with 450 lbs of yams and real pineapple. Then, they candied the brew with toasted marshmallows, a blend of sweet spices, and a touch of lactose for luxuriant smoothness.
Take a sip, and swim through caramel and brown sugar with notes of cinnamon that mingle with the tropical tang of pineapple. It’s like Gun Hill took all the aromas of a warm and bright kitchen during the holidays and distilled them into a boozy brew.
If you’re looking for a decadent dark brew to complement all the flavors on your holiday table AND to give you the strength to deal with your in-laws, then look no further. You’ll find all of that in Mamma’s Candied Yams.
