La Tormenta (2016)
A Note on This Beer
Back for the season, Breakside Brewery's highly anticipated La Tormenta Dry Hopped Sour Ale is a feast for the senses – swollen notes of pineapple, lime guava and barnyard funk fold seamlessly into moderate but distinct levels of tartness.
How does Breakside pack-in this much flavor and create an easy-drinking juice-like experience? This beer’s lemony tart body is severely and expertly dry hopped with four tropical fruit monsters: Equinox, Simcoe, Amarillo and Citra.
Slightly sour, slightly salty and slightly bitter, La Tormenta is a cocktail of kiwis, peach and blueberries with a bready backing that recalls German sour wheat ales. Tangy resin builds as you drink but never overpowers. It might clock in at 6% ABV, but this crowd pleaser remains impeccably light whether you drink it at 11 in the morning, the middle of the afternoon or into the wee hours of the night.
In addition to its sessionable reverence, La Tormenta has earned the reputation as the great Sour equalizer – its gentle but persistent tart flavors unite the sour believers and the doubters into the same square of space. And if you think this is a bold statement, just give it a try.
