A Note on This Beer
With the patience of saints, The Referend Bier Blendery allows nature to fully take its course in every single one of their Wild Ales. They 100% spontaneously ferment all of their beers without the addition of any yeast cultures, and mature them in oak barrels.
Every Ale they produce is a prime example of why Hop Culture calls their taproom “an altar to Lambic tradition.”
Wild Ale fans around the country seek out their spontaneously fermented brews like the Knights of the Round Table hunting the holy grail.
Today, you can thank your lucky stars, because you don’t have to embark on any epic quests to get your hands on three highly-limited variants of The Referend’s Kriek-style Ale, Krak!
You will need to reach for them fast though — we have less than 120 bundles!
Krak! (2019) — 6.9% ABV
To make the 2019 vintage of Krak!, the brewers started with a spontaneously fermented, aged Golden Ale base. Then, they refermented that base on fresh, whole Montmorency and Morello cherries and aged it for a whole year in oak barrels!
The puckering acidity of the base beer beautifully rounds out the cherries’ juicy sweetness, tricking the tongue into thinking you’ve perhaps imbibed some not-yet-ripe cherry wine. Then comes a light, brie-like funk on the dry finish to transform each taste into an elegant wine and cheese experience.
Krak! Vanilla (2019) — 6.9% ABV
For this rendition, the brewers sweetened the deal by steeping their tart, cherry elixir with Tahitian and Malagasy vanilla beans!
Every sip still flows with the cherry juiciness and tongue-tingly acidity, but now with a frosting-like sweetness to help cut the edge. If ever there was a Wild Ale that tastes like fresh cherry pie in the summertime, it’s Krak! Vanilla.
In fact, it’s so scintillatingly delicious that it drives fans like @Brian M. to exclaim, “I can’t say enough good things about this brewery. Hands down the best cask beer I’ve had to date.”
Krak! Rum Barrel (2019) — 7.5% ABV
Of the three renditions of today’s Kriek, this one is like the brother who went to college and got a degree in biochemistry, but obviously partied quite a bit during his senior year.
Having had the same upbringing as the original, you can certainly taste all the tartness and tannic dryness of cherry skins in this version. But, while his brothers were aging in neutral oak, this Rum Barrel edition soaked up warm notes of coconut and hints of orange citrus from its barrels.
With decadent flavors reminiscent of a tartouillat — a cherry and rum cake popular in Burgundy, France — Krak! Rum Barrel is truly a treat to savor.
Try these Kriek-style Ales in a flight and take your palate on a journey through cherry wood forests with Lambic-filled lakes. Or, save them for a truly special occasion — all of The Referend’s brews are made to grow in complexity and nuance the longer they’re cellared.
