A Note on This Beer
Unless you specifically seek it out, it’s pretty rare in the U.S. to find a traditionally-made Baltic Porter that’s actually brewed in the Baltic region of Europe. The one most commonly seen is Black Boss, a mass distributed, overly sweetened and watered down corporate brew.
Say Część! (a Polish hello) to a real taste of traditional Eastern European Dark Beer brewing with Browar Fortuna’s European Star and World Cup winning Komes Baltic Porter. All About Beer Magazine hits the mark when they describe Komes as able to “approach barley wines in fortitude, Imperial stouts in complexity, and liqueurs in after-dinner contentment value.”
Careful, Komes’ 9% ABV goes down like dark brews with half the strength, yet its mouthfeel is exceptionally rich and bold. Waves of dark roasted coffee and bittersweet chocolate-covered almonds greet the nose. Robust dark malts, rum raisins, and hints of black liquorice join the chocolate espresso bean liquor as it swims across the palate before washing away as sweet lingering blackened toffee.
With such a dark and complex flavor profile, Komes was an obvious inclusion to BeerAdvocate’s Top 100 Baltic Porters in the world. Wash down your kielbasa and pierogi with one of the most authentic Baltic Porters straight from the Baltic Sea.
*Check out the diagram on Komes’ label for a timeline of how aging this brew changes its flavor profile from fresh and roasted to dry and complex over the course of 18 months.
