A Note on This Beer
In West Flanders, a small village of fewer than 2,000 people produces some of the best beer in the world. This is Watou, home of legendary Belgian breweries St. Bernardus and Brouwerij Van Eecke.
St. Bernardus beers have become well-renowned and widely available in the United States, but Van Eecke beers are much more difficult to find. Today is an exclusive chance to taste the other half of Watou’s greatness in Van Eecke’s Prior Ale, a complex Belgian Dark Strong Ale with delightful spice and bitterness.
Van Eecke’s Prior offers the smooth texture and decadence of the finest Abbey Ales while adding new dimensions of taste. Earthy and grassy hop bitterness provides refreshing balance to Prior’s rich malt background. Van Eecke’s Prior also ups the ante on the booze and spice, clocking in at 9% ABV with a cabinet’s worth of unique flavor.
Prior offers alluring aromas of fruitcake, clove, rum, nougat and cassis. Notes of caramel, mellow grassy hops and luxuriant mulling spices remain on the palate, allowing for flavors of fig, berry, leather and chocolate. The mouthfeel is creamy, rich, dry and effervescent all at once.
Van Eecke’s Prior stands out among Belgian Strong Ales with charming spice and hop bitterness. There must be something in the water in Watou…
