James Bean (2018)
Allagash Brewing Company
A Note on This Beer
We’ve received several emails this fall requesting that we bring back Allagash’s Bourbon Barrel-Aged James Bean for the 3rd time. This message in particular really hit home. So instead of writing a typical beer description, we’re going to let it speak for itself:
Dear Philip & friends,
I need to know when you’ll bring back James Bean. Don’t even think about not bringing it back— you know how serious us Allagash fans are about our favorite beers.
Let’s talk about James Bean though. I mean, this beer is all swagger, it’s like the James Dean of Bourbon Barrel-Aged Coffee brews!
When I take a sip, I’m transported to a 50’s diner. But instead of stale black coffee, I’m sipping a Bourbon-spiked Ethiopian cold brew. Its 10.1% ABV is immaculately well-balanced and tastes like a blend of Belgian banana-split, cherry-berry fruitiness, juicy fig and stone fruity cocoa of the cold brew— all laced with the soft touch of Bourbon vanilla-soaked oak. It finishes so suave, if James Dean tried it he’d probably respond with “Only the gentle are ever truly strong.”
I know I’m not alone when I say: once I tried a few Allagash beers, the bar for every future Belgian brew I tried was raised to new heights.
And I’m sure I don’t have to remind you that James Bean is the 14th rated Belgian Strong in the world on BeerAdvocate. *Cough get it!* *Cough get it now! cough cough.*
What I’m trying to say is that this beer means a lot to us die hard Allagash fans, and even more to the soon-to-be fans that will taste it for the first time. So please bring it back, and bring it back soon because I... I mean, we... many of us have no other way to get it!
*Serve between 50-55 degrees to unleash the bold flavors that’ll make you feel like a rebel without a cause.
