A Note on This Beer
Trickster’s headbrewer Evan Ruud was beaming with pride when he told us the story of his J-Box Juicy IPA.
His juice-baby, brewed and raised in the beautifully forested lakeside town of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, took home the title of 2018 National IPA Champion!
The competition was fierce. Tricker’s J-Box had to outlast juicebombs from Reuben’s, Southern Tier, Oskar Blues, and many more highly-rated contenders before winning over the crowd!
And this is not your average beer competition.
The National IPA Championships involve 170 beers in a March Madness, head-to-head, bracket-style brawl! There is no judge’s panel. Instead, everyone at the event gets a vote, and in each round, one beer gets knocked out and one moves on — until there’s only one pint standing.
Now, we can’t say for sure that today’s unassuming brew from a state best known for potatoes was the biggest underdog in the race. But it was definitely a Cinderella story-style upset each time J-Box knocked out a beer from a trendy brewery on its way to victory.
It took every ounce of J-Box’s 7% ABV, and every drop of hop-juice from a truckload of tangerine, bubble gum-flavored Mosaic, bright grapefruity Simcoe, and dank piney Chinook Hops. But it was a victory!
You may never know the craft beer pride that Evan felt when his J-Box beat out some of the country’s best IPAs. But share this juicebomb with your buddies, and you’ll get a different kind of pride — one that comes from being known as the go-to source for hoppy beer recommendations.
