A Note on This Beer
Fremont’s Bourbon Barrel Abominable Ale may wear the crown as the most famous beer from Seattle, but there’s another local brewer with a richly bourbony American Strong Ale with its own devoted cult following and unique flavors.
Schooner Exact’s Hoppy the Woodsman is a Seattle favorite that’s held a spot in our hearts since it first swept up the People’s Choice Award at the Washington Brewers Winter Beer Fest.
2015’s edition of the Woodsman is a bourbony sensation, maximizing the boozy impact of its barrels with infusions of brandied cherries, vanilla bean and caramel. New for this year Schooner adds a English Ale yeast to produce complementary notes of candied fruits and wood. Spicy oak weaves among scintillating sweet flavors, naturally heightening the experience of the liquor.
Deep brown sugar, toasted oak and wine-soaked cherry aromas hint at an incoming deluge of whiskey. Alcohol-infused caramels melt on your tongue as Willamette hops provide fragrant bittering balance with hints of flowers, tobacco, and orange rind. Though it’s loaded with mind-spinningly rich whiskey, the Woodsman goes down smooth with a crisp and creamy finish.
Sure the Woodsman’s 8% ABV is slightly lower than Fremont’s Abominable, but it’s still loaded with lush bourbon flavor and at this price, you can get two Woodsmen for the price of one Abominable. Cellar the Woodsman to experience a flavor metamorphosis, or crack into one right now to discover a great barrel aged ale from Seattle!
