Hearts of Oak: Kriek
Woodland Empire Ale Craft
A Note on This Beer
Every pie lover knows it’s all about the crust. That’s why Idaho’s Woodland Empire uses whole tart Montmorency cherries, including the almond-evoking pits, to give their Hearts Of Oak Barrel-Aged Kriek the flavors of homemade cherry pie with a flakey crust. It’s like transforming an entire cherry pie into a refreshing Fruit Sour -- without the food coma!
Aging 18 months in Oak Barrels takes Hearts Of Oak to new levels of Sour Ale complexity. The barrels add layers of oaky vanilla to the palate and smooth out its cherry preserve-like mouthfeel.
Woodland’s Sour barrel program has been kicking some major butt, recently winning a Silver Medal at the North American Beer Awards for a berry Sour. No surprise to us since we’ve been big fans for years -- ever since trying their first crustastic cherry pie brew.
For those of us that could eat pie all day, the only reason we don’t is because we enjoy the ability to stand up and leave the table after we’re done. Hearts Of Oak is a cherry pie lovers dream: all that tart fruit filling and sweet flakey crust is captured in a quenchable cherry Sour perfect for summer refreshment.
*This was an extremely limited batch, so for the love of pie don’t sleep on it!
